On the Wrong Way to Pay it Forward

From the forthcoming Mullins Midwest Travel Companion, Chapter 21: What’s Wrong with America

“I love a good gas station coffee as much as the next guy (ok, probably more). However, I’m convinced that if an outbreak of, say, Ebola were to occur in this great country, ground zero would be the bin full of coffee stirrers at interstate gas stations, where it’s impossible to take your stirrer without touching 67 others.

Another candidate is the stack of drink lids. The fingers of a nation are constantly grazing 10 or 12 lids while trying to pry one off the top. You can’t help but feel as if you should just rake the entire stack into your arms and run out the door. We are paying it forward in a terrible way, people.”
